Surgical Service Unit
According to WHO, a Hospital is an integral part of social medical organization, the function of which is to provide complete health care for the population both curative and preventive and who reach out to the family and its environment. It is also a center for training of health workers and bio-social research” The above mentioned definitions marvelously defined the scope of the surgical department. In daily practice many specialists and subspecialists are presented. General surgery: the scope as the name suggests include a vast variety of surgical procedures that includes, major surgeries such as: Laparotomy for various visceral surgeries on the intestines, spleen, kidneys, liver, gall bladder, breast surgery, thyroidectomy, etc… The scope also includes minor surgeries such as: hernia repair, lipoma, excision, and hemorrhoidectomy.
Neurosurgery deals with surgical conditions related to nervous system such as traumatic brain injury with various motor
function repercussions. It also deals with tumors and degenerative conditions affecting the spine.
ENT as the name suggests this sub-specialty deals with aliments concerning with ear, nose and throats. such as tonsillitis, cancers of the head and neck lump, tear duct problems, facial and skin lesions, balance and skin disorders, snoring and sleeps apnea, ENT allergy problems, voice disorders and ENT surgical procedures just to list few.
Orthopaedics deals with problems that affect the musculoskeletal system that includes treating bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves. Surgeries and services performed include fractures and joints fixation, tendon, ligament, and nerve repair, hip replacement.
The departments work hand in glove with other departments among which the closest are Theater, Out Patient Department and Physiotherapy. The Surgical unit has a capacity of twenty two beds permanently occupied by patients regularly followed-up by two general surgeons, a neurosurgeon, an ENT and an orthopedic surgeon, three general practitioners, over twenty nurses and support staff who carried out their respective activities with full commitment and professionalism on daily basis. Besides the above mentioned practitioners conduct daily consultations and procedures for referred patients in need of specialized attention.
